Uncensored AI in Law

Uncensored AI in Law

Legal tech is facing a unique challenge in the application of artificial intelligence: the need for uncensored AI models to make that next step in terms of functionality. Now this might surprise some, and no, it's not what you're immediately thinking, but I think it's crucial for effective legal practice.

The Current AI Capabilities

Mainstream AI models come with significant guard rails. They work well for general use but fall short when confronted with the realities of legal work.

Uncensored models do exist, though. They're found in open-source communities and offered by smaller, specialised AI companies. These models operate without many of the content filters seen in mainstream AI.

The Reality of Uncensored AI

While major AI providers continue developing safe, general-purpose models, uncensored AI technology is already available. It's out there, and it's not going away.

These uncensored models, developed by various entities, represent a big step towards meeting the needs of industries like law, where dealing with sensitive content is often necessary. Their existence proves that creating AI without typical content restrictions is not only possible but is already in full swing, with huge communities building around them.

Legal professionals often deal with content that would horrify most AI models. Violent crime details, sensitive personal information in family law cases, potentially offensive content in defamation suits - lawyers need tools that can handle all of this without hesitation they don't need: "I'd rather not discuss that"

Uncensored models could allow the legal profession to use AI in ways that restricted models simply can't.

Now an application powered by an uncensored model could:

  1. Conduct comprehensive legal research, including cases with sensitive content
  2. Review evidence, regardless of how disturbing or controversial
  3. Draft thorough documents that address all aspects of a case, even the most sensitive
  4. Aid in strategic planning by considering all possible arguments

Ethical Considerations

Of course, with great capability comes great responsibility. We will need robust safeguards, especially in a work environment:

  1. Strict access control
  2. Thorough usage monitoring to prevent misuse
  3. Comprehensive ethical training for all users
  4. Clear guidelines on appropriate use cases

Going Forward

The technology exists. Uncensored models are here, the cat is out of the box now. It's now up to us building tools within the legal profession to work with AI researchers and ethicists to shape how these tools are implemented.

It'd be amazing to see the larger providers, like Open AI or Anthropic start to look to offer these type of models to regulated industries like law.

We have a chance to influence the development and application of these models, ensuring they meet our needs while upholding ethical standards. The question isn't if uncensored AI will be part of legal practice, but how we'll use it responsibly and effectively.
